The First Taste of Snow Hits the Tetons

First Nordic Tracks in the Tetons

Cody and Colleen Downard, owner/operators of Teton Pines Nordic Center, got out for first nordic tracks with their dog on Sunday at Grand Targhee.  While the base is still thin, if you’re keen to get sliding & gliding on real snow, head up to Targhee. Too early to groom, but great to get out on snow. Keep watching for snow over 8000 ft, and we’ll soon have a minimal base to ski south off Teton Pass to Mt Elly, or around the summit of Togwotee Pass.

Grand Teton National Park Press Release – Moose Wilson Road Closure

The unpaved section of the Moose-Wilson Road in Grand Teton National Park will be temporarily closed for road grading beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 17 and will reopen by 6 a.m. Thursday, October 18. If the road maintenance work is not completed during this one night, the road will also be closed the following night during the same timeframe. Grading will improve the road surface and provide a better and safer experience for motorists and cyclists.

On Monday, October 22, the northern portion of the Moose-Wilson Road, between the Murie Ranch Junction and Death Canyon Junction, will close for the season due to construction of roadside pullouts. October 31 will be the final day the road is open to vehicle traffic for the season. Beginning November 1, walking and biking are allowed on the road until the status changes to over-snow access.

Roadwork schedules may change, or be delayed, due to weather conditions, equipment malfunction, or other extenuating circumstances.

Featured Trail
The CD Trail on Togwotee Pass – Check out the new fat bike & classic cross country ski trail added to JHNordic.com– perfect for pre-season mountain bike riding & training, the CD trail runs from near the BlackRock USFS station on Hwy 26 on the lower, western side of Togwotee Pass. In winter , the CD trail is part of the groomed snowmobile trail network groomed by the WY Trails Program. The trail is a wide forest service graded dirt road when not covered in snow, making it a fun, relatively easy year-round trail. The highlight are the wide views of the Tetons, overlooking the Buffalo Fork Valley. In winter, this trail is a favorite of Dave Hunger’s, Teton Mountain Bike Tours, for fat biking, with its easy access, parking, smooth groomed surface, big views and discovery of the northern Gros Ventre Mountains – near Mt Leidy.  Note: if you choose to ride the CD before winter, be sure to bring bear spray and a partner, as the bears have not yet gone into winter hibernation!
Don’t forget that you can also use JHNordic.com trail maps in the off season/pre-season, for a great way to discover hiking or mountain biking trails beyond the usual!

The 16th annual Teton Ridge Classic presented by Madshus will be held on January 12th, 2019. This year’s race and future races will take place up at Grand Targhee Resort.  The Teton Ridge Ranch informed race organizers this summer that there will be no public access on the Teton Ridge Ranch property at any time.  This came as a surprise to us and disappointing news that we have all skied our last days at the Teton Ridge Ranch.

However, we are fortunate to have run the race up at Targhee last year to show many of you the future Teton Ridge Classic course.  If you did not have a chance to participate in last years race the course and venue was well received by participants.  There will not be any major changes to the course that was run for the 2018 race.

The website has been updated with information for this year’s race and the registration is open.  Register by December 15th for the early registration discount.

Jackson Hole Masters Nordic Program
Looking for expressions of interest! We want to hear from you! A number of Nordic skiers – both recreational and racers, classic cross country and skate – have expressed interest in starting up a new Nordic Masters Program or group activities.
Ideas proposed so far are having two different groups, one geared toward racing and the other toward more recreational excursions which would also include some instruction on technique.  We’re suggesting:
-Tuesdays for the race group
-Thursdays for the recreational group.
Meeting times would probably be 11am or noon. Locations could alternate weekly and coaches need to be recruited. If you would like to help us to organize this, we would welcome it.. The aim is to keep it simple, fun, improve our fitness and ski techniques!
Send us your ideas and preferences to Info@JHNordic.com

Trail Creek Nordic Center – Feb. 10th

Fantastic Frost!

While the sun is doing its best to beat back the morning’s frost, the battle has not yet been won.  As of 10:45 AM the temperature was still a somewhat cool -11ºC/12ºF and even though the sky is definitely brightening, one would say that fog still prevails.  While one might say that the fog would bring a lugubrious nature to today’s Nordic outing, if the fantastical nature of the winter wonderland created by the outstanding frost formations  is considered, then one’s ski journey would surely be a festive event and a great reason to come on out to Trail Creek today.

Today’s grooming was a single pass with the Pisten Bully of the Moose Chase course.  While most of the grooming focused on the skate lanes, the classic tracks were touched up in a few places.  Some of the skate lanes were best lined while in some of the more open areas the focus was on widening the trails in preparation for the race.  While the snow is becoming a bit tired, all in all it is holding well and skiing is good.

Groomer’s choice for today is Homesite.

Cross-Country & skate skiing, fat biking open Winter 2015-16 in Jackson Hole & Teton Valley

Snow is falling in Jackson Hole, Teton Valley, the Tetons and surrounding mountains, providing a good early season base for cross-country and skate skiing (Nordic skiing) and fat biking.

Teton Canyon - Skate and Classic
Teton Canyon – Skate and Classic

Fat bikes have been spotted on the Old Pass Road (Teton Pass), Cache Creek, Teton Valley, as well as many of the bike paths around Jackson and Teton Co WY. On the west side of the Tetons, Teton Canyon has been groomed for the past week by TVTAP, and Grand Targhee has excellent snow for Nordic skiing and fat biking.

Ski tracks up the Moose-Wilson Road from Granite Canyon trailhead (north of Teton Village) into Grand Teton National Park have just enough base to ski out to LSR Preserve.

Grooming begins on Teton Co/Jackson Parks & Rec trails and pathways on December 15th. Grooming in Grand Teton National Park Inner Park Road also starts mid December..
